Forming the first of four planned f/1.8 , this S 85mm f/1.8 prime delivers excellent results across all fronts. With 9 elements arranged in 8 groups and the use of 2 Extra-low Dispersion (ED) lenses, both axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberrations are well controlled and there is minimal distortion displayed. This prime focal width is aimed at portrait photographers as well as photographers who capture any medium telephoto subjects such as fashion, weddings or close detail images.

The bright aperture combines with a 9-blade circular diaphragm rendering sharp subjects with beautifully soft, round out of focus bokeh areas, without vignetting. The S 85mm f/1.8 also excels when recording videos through the use of a mechanism which suppresses focus breathing. This capitalises on the latest L mount cameras in the S range including the . Completing a number of desirable features are the inclusion of a dust and splash resistant design with rugged together with durable build quality.
